Powered by Firework Auckland Aces batsman Glenn Phillips is flying to Sydney this evening to join the BLACKCAPS as batting cover for tomorrow’s third and final Test against Australia at the SCG.Advertisement  Advertisement It’s the 23-year-old’s first call-up to the Test squad and comes as Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls continue to battle viral infections which have prevented them from training the past couple of days. Advertisement Phillips has made a strong start to the 2019-20 season by scoring centuries in all three formats, including an impressive First-Class hundred against the star-studded England Test side in Whangarei in November. BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead stressed Phillips’ inclusion was precautionary and they were still hopeful both sick players would be fit. “We’ve obviously got a few balls up in the air at the moment and we want to be on the safe side and have options,” Stead said. “Glenn has been in terrific form this season and has good versatility with where he can bat and the roles he can play. “He’s been around the BLACKCAPS T20 team for the past couple of years so should feel comfortable in the environment. “We’re still hopeful Henry and Kane will pull through and we will give them every chance to prove their fitness. “If one or both are ruled out then we will consider our options and most importantly how they balance the side for this final Test.” Phillips holds an impressive First-Class average of 42.5 with four centuries to his name and has previously played 11 T20 Internationals for the BLACKCAPS. Nitehawks rally past Heat to take commanding lead in KIJHL Final

first_imgIf the Chase Heat need a shoulder to cry on following Game two of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Championship Series, the squad can put in a call to the Nelson Leafs.Because the Nelson Leafs are probably the only team that can relate to the heartbreaking experienced by the Heat after Beaver Valley rallied from a 4-1 deficit to edge Chase 5-4 Tuesday night at the Fruitvale Arena to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five final.Game three is Thursday in Chase. The Heat looked primed to even the series after jumping all over the Hawks in the opening period, building a 3-0 lead eight minutes into the game on timely goals by Josh Bourne, on the power play, Michael Fidanza and Cory Loring.Dylan Kent stopped the bleeding with a power play marker for Beaver Valley two minutes before the period ended. But Kolten Moore restored the three-goal advantage 10 seconds after Kent’s marker. This all happening despite the Heat being outshot 15-8 in the period. However, unlike the comeback against the Leafs during Game two of the Murdoch Division Final when Beaver Valley scored twice in the final minute of the game before winning in overtime, the Hawks had a full 40 minutes to complete this comeback. Two goals by Bradley Ross in the second period combined with a power play goal from McKoy Hauck midway through the third frame tied the game at 4-4.That set the stage for Aiden Bowell to complete the comeback with a goal seven minutes from the finish line.Beaver Valley outshot the Heat 42-21 making a winner out of Tallon Kramer, who rebounded from a shaky opening frame.Nic Bruyere was in goal for Chase. If necessary, Game four of the series goes Friday in Chase. If the series needs to go the full five games, the final contest is scheduled back in Fruitvale Sunday. For Heat fans thinking about jumping off the bus, Chase rallied from a 2-0 deficit during the Okanagan-Shuswap Conference Final to oust Osoyoos Coyotes in five games.last_img read more

CRYSTAL WATER STAKES QUOTES

first_imgNOTES: Winning owner Charles Garvey is from Alberta, Canada. -30- TRAINER QUOTES JOCKEY QUOTEScenter_img FERNANDO PEREZ, PATRIOTS RULE, WINNER: “The turf is a little wet today; he didn’t handle it great at first. He likes to close and he finishes well, though, so I wasn’t worried. He doesn’t like to be inside. In his last race he was on the inside and was fighting the whole time but today I had a really good trip and he fired.”             ROBERTINO DIODORO, PATRIOTS RULE, WINNER: “My assistant (Sean Williams) said the horse has had a couple of rough trips and last time he needed the start, definitely, off the layoff. He’s a horse that doesn’t like to run on the inside of horses, either.“I know a lot of guys have been on me and Sean to change riders and stuff, because when you look at a lot of his replays you can point the finger at the rider and say what the heck’s he doing, but it’s the way the horse is. Fernando (Perez) has done a great job . . . He’s not that big of a horse, but he’s got the right attitude. He doesn’t want to run inside of horses. The big thing with him is to get a little pace to run at and get a clear trip. He was in the clear down the backside and running comfortably. This is probably the first time I’ve won a stakes and didn’t holler. I never said a word the whole race.”last_img read more

Apple’s ARKit and the Future of AR

first_imgFew Industries will not be Transformed by AR an… The mobile AR software wave is the main reason people are paying attention to AR. Mobile software makes AR accessible to anyone with a smart device.A great fit for the gaming industry, mobile AR software literally brings games to life by superimposing virtual objects in the player’s real world. Just ask anyone who’s fended off zombies in The Walking Dead’s “Our World” game. But mobile AR promises real-world benefits, too. For example, AR can superimpose arrows and instructions on a new piece of machinery to help train employees on how to operate it. Or AR can guide healthcare professionals to accurately insert IVs by overlaying anatomical configurations on patient’s arms.Zion Market Research expects the global AR market to rise to $133 billion in the next 4 years. We’ve been hearing about AR and VR for years, so why the sudden explosion? Apple’s ARKit is now available on all iPhones thanks to the release of iOS 11 this fall, which means it could be on up to 400 million devices by the end of 2018. What is Apple’s ARKit?Apple’s ARKit allows developers to create AR apps relying on the phone’s camera, which finds horizontal planes in the room, applies appropriate lighting to virtual objects, and moves real objects in sync with virtual ones. The most important feature is it works fast, so there’s no jarring disconnect. The real and the virtual appear to co-exist seamlessly. Apple also notably emphasized ARKit’s efficient CPU use in the release, so it won’t drain the battery, something that’s been a problem with previous forays into AR like Pokemon Go.ConclusionApple’s release of ARKit is huge for brands. They can now create AR apps to promote their products, encourage adoption, and drive more sales. As for users? They simply get to enjoy the technology in the AR-enabled apps they download. This is the first post of a four-part series on Apple’s ARKit. Check in tomorrow to learn how Apple’s ARKit will revolutionize ecommerce.Michael Quoc is the founder & CEO of Dealspotr, an open shopping platform bringing together up-and-coming brands, influencers, and savvy shoppers around today’s best deals. Perhaps the best way to understand AR is to compare it with VR:Virtual reality (VR) is a fully immersive, completely artificial, virtual 3-D world. Users need to use headsets, controllers, and software in order to experience it.Augmented reality (AR), on the other hand, uses what’s already there. AR relies on a live view in the real world, and enhances it through computer-generated sound, graphics, and video. Users can either use AR hardware like Google glasses, or the camera on a smartphone or tablet, to experience it. The future of ARAR has seen a swift rise over the past few years, thanks to four distinct iterations:Mobile AR software that works on smartphones and tablets, like Apple ARKit and Facebook’s Camera Effects PlatformStandalone mobile AR hardware, like Google Tango phonesTethered smartglasses that require a smartphone, tablet or PC connection, like Meta sunglassesStandalone smartglasses that work on their own, like Microsoft HoloLenslast_img read more

Why The Time To Argue For A Meeting Is Now

first_imgYou’ve had a meeting or two with your dream client. They’re engaged, and you have developed an excellent understanding of their needs. At the end of your last meeting, they asked you to send them pricing and a proposal and told you they’d have a meeting with you in two weeks after they’ve had a chance to review what you send them. The chirping you hear are the crickets that the Gods of Sales have sent as a plague against your pipeline, a punishment for your ceding control of the process and failing your dream client (you have left them alone to figure things out for themselves). You are now chasing them, a desperate stalker begging for a meeting. If you are going to argue for a meeting, you want to do it while you are in a meeting. Waiting and chasing does nothing to improve your odds.Who Leads This Dance? In a choice between you leading your client through the process of making a decision to change or allowing them to lead, the responsibility to lead belongs to you. You can, no doubt, collaborate and bring your client into that process with you, improving their buy-in and both of your results. Or you can allow them to lead, even though they lack your knowledge and experience.Your dream client buys what you sell infrequently and for a single company. You frequently sell your solution and help many different people and lots of different companies, giving you a distinct advantage in situational knowledge. You know what works when it works and when it doesn’t, and why you might do one thing instead of something else.If someone should be leading, it should be you. It’s your responsibility, even if your dream client is trying to drive. There is a reason we call what we do “selling.” You have to sell a meeting, then you sell the process (a series of other meetings and commitments), and then you sell your solution. The Time to Sell a Meeting Is Before You Lose ControlThe time to sell the meeting is before you lose control of the process. The time to sell the process is when you are sitting across from your contacts. If you are going to trade value (an idea you will find in The Lost Art of Closing: Winning the 10 Commitments That Drive Sales), your rationale for the meeting and what your dream client gains by saying yes, is before your contact tries to take control of the process. You recommend the next steps and share how it benefits your client. No more pushy sales tactics. The Lost Art of Closing shows you how to proactively lead your customer and close your sales. If you miss the window and your contact tries to take control of the process (something they may not even be aware they are doing), you have to try to take it back by arguing your case for a meeting (without being argumentative, but by being a combative diplomat). You gain nothing by ceding control. You leave your dream client in a worse position, knowing they cannot answer their questions or resolve their concerns. They are also unlikely to be able to answer questions from their peers, and you should not expect them to sell the deal for you. You do, however, have a lot to lose.Losing Without a FightThere is a difference between being likable and needing to be liked. It is helpful to be likable, the kind of person people with whom people want to do business. Being smart and likable is an excellent combination. What is not helpful is needing to be liked, which means “conflict-averse,” unwilling to have difficult conversations when that is what is required. Being smart isn’t enough to make up for an unwillingness to engage in the conversation about what comes next.Look, you are going to leave some meetings without another meeting securely locked on your client’s calendar. However, there is no reason to give up without making a strong case for doing what you know to be right and preventing your dream client from skipping steps and avoiding the conversations they need to have to get what they want in the future. You gain nothing by giving up and giving in without giving your best effort in securing the next meeting.A Greater Challenge LaterIt’s no more comfortable having the conversation about what your dream client needs to do later, after time has gone by and you have spent months chasing them across time and space, both of you older and neither of you any wiser. Arguing your case with your dream client’s voice mail isn’t wildly effective, nor is making your case over email, where your note will quickly slip off the screen and forgotten. There is no scenario where waiting to have this conversation makes it easier for you to gain the commitment you need. It may, however, make it more difficult after your contacts have had conversations without you present to help them.If you have a choice between doing what is right and doing what is easy, do what is right. Doing what seems easy makes things more difficult in the long run.Trade enough value that you deserve a yes, and then ask. If you don’t get a yes, restate the value and ask again. Get the Free eBook!
