Why bankers are upset credit unions may get to do more business lending

first_imgby:  Patty TascarellaEfforts are underway to make it easier for credit unions to lend to businesses, making for a more streamlined process that will allow them to move faster on deals and do larger transactions. The National Credit Union Association has revised its rules for commercial lending. The proposal, which some local credit unions got their first look at last week, eliminates a requirement for borrowers to personally guarantee loans, puts an 80 percent loan-to-value limit on collateral used in securing a loan, increases the amount of loans permitted for a sole borrower and raises the cap on aggregate construction and development lending. NCUA members have a two-month window for commentary before the proposal is finalized. It marks the first major revision in 12 years. It’s no surprise, but banks aren’t fans. continue reading » 5SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

When he asked the suspect what they were doing, the suspect replied that they was there to “suck toes.” The victim then punched and kicked the suspect in the mouth before and forced the suspect out of the home. Spotlight finds Anthony Rendon, who could be nearing an end with Nationals

first_img How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco LOS ANGELES — Chants of “M-V-P” filled the stadium the last time Anthony Rendon took the field. He’ll hear the chants again Thursday, in all likelihood, but they will not be for him.Cody Bellinger is the preferred choice for the National League MVP award at Dodger Stadium. Rendon, the Washington Nationals’ third baseman, might give Bellinger a decent run once the regular-season votes are revealed in November. After years of playing in the shadow of star teammate Bryce Harper, Rendon enters the National League Division Series as the best player standing in the way of the Dodgers advancing this postseason. The 29-year-old from Houston missed 10 games early in the season with a left elbow contusion. He bounced back to finish with 34 home runs, 126 RBIs (most in MLB) and a .319 batting average – all career highs. In July, he was chosen to appear in the All-Star Game for the first time.Rendon insists he did not make any intentional adjustments prior to this season. He suggested luck played an outsized role in his outsized stats. He was still chuckling over one home run in August, against the Brewers at Nationals Park, that he was certain was a flyout on contact. Rendon flipped his bat and looked away in disgust, only to circle the bases upon realizing his good fortune. “I think if I actually knew if I changed anything, or if I knew if I was going to have this type of season, I actually would have done it a long time ago and I wouldn’t have waited six or seven years into it,” Rendon said.In the absence of a more concrete explanation, we are left to speculate how Rendon ascended into the spotlight. Perhaps it was the absence of Harper, who signed a lucrative free agent contract with the rival Phillies after his seventh season in D.C. Perhaps it’s his own impending free agency; Rendon is regarded as the best position player who will hit the market this winter.Whatever the reason, Rendon’s modesty seems genuine. A camera caught him yawning in the dugout during the wild-card game. Wearing flip-flops as he slouched backward in a black leather chair, Rendon began his press conference Wednesday by laughing about the yawn seen ’round the world.“I’ve said this before from the other side, when I didn’t know him as well,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “This guy is just ‘Mr. Consistent.’ He puts the ball in play, has power to all fields. He’s not afraid. What makes him really good, I think, is that he’s not afraid to hit with two strikes. And he’ll battle you up there and hit the ball the other way. But when he gets to two strikes, there’s no panic. I think he has one of the best two-strike approaches in the game.”Related Articlescenter_img Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Martinez also suggested Rendon’s defense at third base makes him worthy of a Gold Glove award, something Rendon has never won. He is unlikely to dethrone Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, the annual winner at the position. But it’s worth noting that, like Bellinger, Rendon’s MVP case is not merely built on his gaudy offensive numbers. “All season long, just how consistent he is – no ups and downs,” Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin said. “You can never tell if he’s struggling. He’s as well-prepared as anybody in the game. Obviously, offensively he’s been amazing for us, but defensively he makes all the plays. He lays out for balls, turns double plays, gets rid of the ball quick.”Rendon’s focus is not effortless. Until Washington scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to stun the Brewers on Tuesday, Rendon was a few outs away from what might have been his final game in a Nationals uniform. Banishing that possibility from his mind, he said, was not easy.“It’s a big decision in our life, in my life, and my wife and my daughter’s and my family,” he said. “But you can’t worry about the future. We can only worry about what’s happening right now.”Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon answers questions during a news conference on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. Apple’s ARKit and the Future of AR

first_imgFew Industries will not be Transformed by AR an… The mobile AR software wave is the main reason people are paying attention to AR. Mobile software makes AR accessible to anyone with a smart device.A great fit for the gaming industry, mobile AR software literally brings games to life by superimposing virtual objects in the player’s real world. Just ask anyone who’s fended off zombies in The Walking Dead’s “Our World” game. But mobile AR promises real-world benefits, too. For example, AR can superimpose arrows and instructions on a new piece of machinery to help train employees on how to operate it. Or AR can guide healthcare professionals to accurately insert IVs by overlaying anatomical configurations on patient’s arms.Zion Market Research expects the global AR market to rise to $133 billion in the next 4 years. We’ve been hearing about AR and VR for years, so why the sudden explosion? Apple’s ARKit is now available on all iPhones thanks to the release of iOS 11 this fall, which means it could be on up to 400 million devices by the end of 2018. What is Apple’s ARKit?Apple’s ARKit allows developers to create AR apps relying on the phone’s camera, which finds horizontal planes in the room, applies appropriate lighting to virtual objects, and moves real objects in sync with virtual ones. The most important feature is it works fast, so there’s no jarring disconnect. The real and the virtual appear to co-exist seamlessly. Apple also notably emphasized ARKit’s efficient CPU use in the release, so it won’t drain the battery, something that’s been a problem with previous forays into AR like Pokemon Go.ConclusionApple’s release of ARKit is huge for brands. They can now create AR apps to promote their products, encourage adoption, and drive more sales. As for users? They simply get to enjoy the technology in the AR-enabled apps they download. This is the first post of a four-part series on Apple’s ARKit. Perhaps the best way to understand AR is to compare it with VR:Virtual reality (VR) is a fully immersive, completely artificial, virtual 3-D world. Users need to use headsets, controllers, and software in order to experience it.Augmented reality (AR), on the other hand, uses what’s already there. AR relies on a live view in the real world, and enhances it through computer-generated sound, graphics, and video. Users can either use AR hardware like Google glasses, or the camera on a smartphone or tablet, to experience it. The future of ARAR has seen a swift rise over the past few years, thanks to four distinct iterations:Mobile AR software that works on smartphones and tablets, like Apple ARKit and Facebook’s Camera Effects PlatformStandalone mobile AR hardware, like Google Tango phonesTethered smartglasses that require a smartphone, tablet or PC connection, like Meta sunglassesStandalone smartglasses that work on their own, like Microsoft HoloLenslast_img read more

Canadians and retailers toy with risk and reward through mystery box trend

first_imgTORONTO — When Toronto YouTubers Becky Wright and Kelsey MacDermaid picked up the mail last October, the sight of a bright blue box had them bubbling with excitement. The duo, who call themselves the Sorry Girls and make do-it-yourself videos on YouTube, had shelled out $67 for the box on eBay, but had no idea who it was from or what was in it.The package was one of the thousands of “mystery boxes” advertised and sold online by average joes hoping to make a quick buck, hobbyists who take delight in orchestrating a game of risk and reward and businesses looking to get in on the craze.Boxes typically go for as little as $20, but some have fetched as much as $50,000. What’s inside remains a secret until it’s opened by the purchaser, but social media shows some people discovering Apple MacBook computers, Louis Vuitton wallets and Rolex watches, while others have found holiday ornaments, DVDs, action figures or even broken electronics.Wright and MacDermaid’s box was full of crocheted items — a pumpkin, fingerless gloves, a headband, a hat and a dream catcher.“We got lucky, unlike most people who order these things,” Wright said. They said they have since noticed YouTubers buying the boxes — primarily because they are a fast and easy way to rack up views for a channel.“I was seeing some getting so ridiculous. (They would say) ‘I bought a $5,000 mystery storage locker of stuff,’” said Wright. “That’s crazy.”Kent Sikstrom, Kijiji Canada’s community relations manager, said in an email that the company doesn’t have any official policies limiting the sale of mystery boxes, but chalked it up to being a “fad/trend of the month” and said it is “likely being exaggerated for entertainment purposes.”Meanwhile, eBay’s policy does not allow “mystery items where contents aren’t identified,” but The Canadian Press found plenty of boxes with no descriptions of what’s inside listed on the site.Camille Kowalewski, eBay Canada and Latin America’s head of communications, clarified the boxes are allowed if you indicate the type of item enclosed.Kowalewski said boxes with collectible or sports themes get the most traction, but said she has noticed retail brands and specialty goods companies wading into the trend.Muji sold Fukukan or “lucky cans” that contain handmade traditional lucky charms from different regions in Japan in November, while Nordstrom has rolled out $25 “surprise bags” it stuffs with seven or eight small items from accessory and memento maker Three Potato Four.Brian Ehrenworth, the president of sports collectibles company Frameworth, said his company also jumped on the trend, which he first learned about three years ago when he saw someone selling mystery boxes at a trade show.A few buyers were excited with what they got in their boxes, but others were disappointed. Ehrenworth, whose company has long-standing relationships with athletes, figured he could use his connections to put a twist on the model that would see every buyer walk away with something of considerable value, limiting the gamble to which team the merchandise they got was related to.Within six months, Frameworth was selling its first set of mystery boxes. That set and every other one following it has sold out.The latest version is being sold for $250 plus shipping on eBay, though they are advertised as having an average value of $725. Each includes an authentic, autographed, fully-stitched and officially licensed NHL jersey, though buyers won’t know which they’ll receive. Fifty of the 200 available boxes will have a jersey from an NHL All-Star or Legend such as Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Wayne Gretzky or Bobby Orr, but one contains a “golden ticket” redeemable for a Sidney Crosby game-used stick valued at $5,000.“They might not get (the Crosby product), but they should be happy with the product they receive because if they don’t like it, they can put it back up on eBay,” Ehrenworth said.Reselling anything in his boxes, he said, should be easy because interest in the NHL is broad, but he warns that reselling mystery box items you are unhappy with might be difficult if you buy from sellers that are just as secretive as their boxes.“There are a plethora of companies that will do this kind of thing. Some of them are very reputable, but a lot of them in our industry are not,” he said.“If you have someone working out of their basement forging autographs and you are buying from them because it is cheaper, then let the buyer beware. You are probably going to end up getting ripped off.”Follow @Tara_Deschamps on Twitter.Tara Deschamps, The Canadian Presslast_img read more
