Aston Villa boss Lambert plans cautious approach at Chelsea

first_imgAston Villa manager Paul Lambert has suggested that his side’s recent defeat against Arsenal means they will play cautiously at Chelsea on Saturday.Villa won three and drew one of their opening four Premier League games and are third in the table prior to Saturday’s meeting with the table-topping Blues. But the 3-0 home humbling against Arsenal in their last league game was an ominous sign for them ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge. And Lambert said: “We were too open against Arsenal.“Sometimes that happens when you’re playing well – you think you can go out there and take anybody on.“I’m not going to sit here and say we’re going to go there and play free-flowing attacking football. You do that and I think you’ll get beaten pretty heavily.”Chelsea are three points clear after winning their opening four league fixtures and then drawing their last league game, at Manchester City.“You’ve got to try and get a foothold and not be out of it before you’ve started,” Lambert added. “If we can do that, then great.“We will get chances hopefully on Saturday and when we do, we have to take them.“We’ll go there with nothing to lose. Nobody expects anything from us. We are up against one of the best teams in Europe.”Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Snowball Earth: Manufacturing a Narrative

first_imgThe press and TV treat presumed scenarios like a “snowball Earth” as historic facts.  A look at how the sausage is made, however, shows little empirical meat and mostly filler in a process characterized by tweaking, picking, and constant debate. In a recent PNAS commentary, Boswell A. Wing of McGill University is glad that two geochemists appear to be buttressing the primary supporting evidence for a snowball earth (a presumed period of ice from poles to equator): a relationship between higher carbon dioxide levels and the end of the snowball.  Careful reading of his commentary, though, shows a number of twists, turns, reversals, proposals and anomalies in the efforts to keep the narrative going.  The following paragraph extracts out some of the hedging and fudging words that Wing used in efforts to support the snowball earth narrative:The proposal … creative solutions … the snowball debate … Whether the “original pillars” of the snowball hypothesis have survived this scrutiny is an active debate … elevated CO2 levels—is primarily inferred through the intricate veil … promised to lift this veil … what seemed to be direct evidence … This conclusion was recently turned on its head … inferred from the same evidence … conflicting interpretations … given a fixed atmospheric lifetime … estimated if an appropriate record … can be identified … This exercise requires two assumptions … must have remained close to modern estimates … the framework laid out above … originally seemed … hypothesized snowball state … not only a function of atmospheric CO2 levels … increased photosynthetic O2 dilutes the isotopic anomaly … another potential control knob that could have amplified or suppressed … recently called upon to explain the large … anomalies … in an atmosphere not much more CO2-rich than today’s … A less-dilute signal would compensate for … Under the assumption of … this scenario is consistent with … very different from … that had originally been proposed … This dilemma has been neatly resolved with a unique mechanistic model … Relying on a clever calibration … to release the constraints of geochemical uniformitarianism … can produce … only if … recent bold extrapolation … is not applicable … seems … inference … dynamic … enabled a pair of unique constraints … two styles of snowball glaciations … delayed development … different timescale … leads to a pair … in South China … suggests … more likely … as might be expected … provocative hints … may eventually be overshadowed … can constrain … this approach should be applicable … holy grail … exploratory … consistent with a few previous quantitative estimates … may reflect a less pervasive process than the geologic record suggests … or perhaps … appears to have had … a quantitative narrative … the viability of this narrative ….These words vastly outnumber the actual appeals to empirical data, such as levels of oxygen-17 in ice cores or measurements of sulfide minerals.  The empirical data, however, are useless without an interpretive framework.  They could be interpreted various ways.  In fact, Wing discussed a situation in which the very same data were “used” to produce opposite conclusions – one that suggested CO2 levels were much higher at the end of the snowball, and one that estimated they were the same as today.Wing does produce one graph of “normalized gross biosphere production,” which only indirectly relates to the snowball earth hypothesis.  It’s clear that someone must make assumptions to assess what the dozen or so data points mean.  Since they cover 310 million assumed years, is there enough resolution to conclude anything? It appears that having a narrative is the real motivator here.  The proposal of a scenario – even if mythical – provides jobs:The proposal of a “snowball” Earth, covered in ice from poles to equator, occupies a special place in the hall of fame of Earth science hypotheses. Spectacular geological evidence for an icy Earth, creative solutions for the initiation and escape from a snowball state, a multitude of directly testable consequences and potential links to the origin of animals all speak to the fundamentally integrative nature of the proposal. This integrative nature allows for a broad range of scientific specializations—from astrophysics to molecular biology—to contribute to the snowball debate, but has also brought the hypothesis under continuous critical scrutiny. Whether the “original pillars” of the snowball hypothesis have survived this scrutiny is an active debate….Wing briefly mentions “spectacular geological evidence for an icy Earth,” but within two sentences questions whether the “original pillars” of the hypothesis have survived scrutiny, saying they are still actively debated.  From there he discusses how those pillars are not seen, but rather inferred, through an “intricate veil” of oceanic carbonate chemistry.  Then it was on to conflicting interpretations of the same evidence and other problems that a new paper might resolve, Wing hopes. His last paragraph stresses the value of the narrative.  While he asserts that the authors of a new paper provide a “quantitive footing,” it implies that everything prior has been qualitative.  That’s a lot of faith to put on one paper.  Even if the footing is solid, it means that scientists are only at the doorstep:Despite its clear importance to extreme Earth-system events like the end-Permian and the Marinoan snowball Earth, examination of the initial arbiter of geologic trends in atmospheric CO2 and O2—global biospheric productivity—has remained mostly qualitative, inspired inferences from the fossil record notwithstanding. The paper by Cao and Bao places these examinations on quantitative footing and opens the door for new understanding of the coevolution of life and Earth. If one is only at the door of understanding, in other words, he does not yet have that understanding.  The pursuit of understanding is worthwhile, but when the understanding is always beyond the threshold of a door, one could ask if the right door has been chosen. This is no different than giving idle scriptwriters a new plot to play with.  One stands up and says, “What if the earth were once like a big snowball?”  The others pipe in, “Cool idea!  I love snowballs.  I like it, man.  What can we do with it?”  The others start thinking of ideas: “Once upon a time, ice covered the whole earth!”  When?  “Uh, let’s say 635 million years ago… that doesn’t hurt the dinosaur script.”  Someone asks, “But how did the snowball start?”  They furrow their brows for a few minutes on that one, then somebody offers a “Maybe this” type of clever solution.  Another asks, “How did it end?”  More furrowed brows for a few minutes as they realize how difficult it is to get a frozen earth to melt again.  “Maybe elevated carbon dioxide did it.  You know, like global warming.”  Everyone thinks that’s great.  “We can even tie this in with Darwinian evolution, claiming that melting ice created an explosion of new life!”  Cheers go up.  “We have a script!”The fact-checkers report back with numerous problems.  Data are hard to come by, and require interpretations that experts disagree on.  The scriptwriters, eager to maintain their plot line, come up with “clever calibrations” and “creative solutions” for each impossibility or conflict.  One of them says that they could “release the constraints of geochemical uniformitarianism” just this one time for the sake of the project.  Stretching timescales, special pleading, and ad hoc scenarios are liberally sprinkled into the plot to keep the narrative going.  They run to the press, touting, “Snowball Earth is a Fact!”  The artists and animators go to work.  Snowball Earth enters the public consciousness as a Fact of Science, while behind the scenes, the scriptwriters continue an “active debate” about it to look busy.Meanwhile, the sulfides and ice cores just sit there, silently, meaning only what some human being interprets them to mean.Anyone taught to respect science for its presumed “Scientific Method” that supposedly guarantees Truth about the natural world should be appalled at what “historical science” has become.  It’s job security for storytellers.  The game is to become ensconced as a member of the accepted consensus, swear allegiance to Naturalism, then whale away.  The media will love you for keeping them gainfully employed.  As scientists parade by in triumph, only perceptive outsiders regret that Truth gets trampled in the streets under the chariot wheels of Imagination. Poverty summit gets experts thinking

first_imgRory Brooks is the founder of the Brooks World Poverty Institute which researches methods to reduce and eradicate poverty. (Image: Ray Maota) The inaugural Global Poverty Summit has given experts in global poverty reduction a platform to deliberate on ways in which poverty can be alleviated throughout the world. The summit was held at Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg, from 17 -19 January 2011 and is the brainchild of businessman Dr Rory Brooks of the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), based at the University of Manchester. At the summit, 50 experts on the subject of poverty discussed whether the World Trade Organisation’s Doha Development Agenda talks will be able to reduce poverty in developing countries. Also on the agenda were the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the UN Development Programme. These are a set of goals endorsed in 2000 by nations around the world in an attempt to reduce global poverty by 2015.Brooks said: “Over the last decade, the plight of the poor has come under the microscope and talking about ways to reduce it, is the first step to its reduction.”He added that when funding research into global poverty eradication strategies, it’s vital that the research is able to go on and influence policy, which ultimately produces improved outcomes.“This is why we felt it was important to support this Global Poverty Summit in Johannesburg,” he said.BWPI research director Rorden Wilkinson said: “Johannesburg is a good example of the stark inequalities within the city. That’s why we chose to host the summit here.”Speakers at the summit included Nobel economics laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz; Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary-general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development; and David Hulme, professor of development studies at the University of Manchester.Millennium Development GoalsIn 2000 world leaders signed the Millennium Declaration from which eight MDGs were drawn. Leaders accepted collective responsibility to reduce poverty in their own countries as well as globally. The MDGs are:to eradicate extreme poverty and hungerachieve universal primary educationpromote gender equality and empower womenreduce child mortalityimprove maternal healthcombat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseasesensure environmental sustainabilitydevelop a global partnership for development.“The MDGs have been a success because they have provided the moral underpinning and have catalysed collective action,” said Hulme. “It is vital that we all continue to strive to meet the targets set out in the MDGs, but the MDGs represent a bare minimum of what needs to be done to reduce poverty and halt the growth in inequality.”At the summit, delegates reached a consensus that for MDGs to succeed, especially in Africa, it was necessary to establish national plans specific to individual countries.Trade talksDiscussing the impact of the Doha round of talks on food security, delegates endorsed a proposal that countries should have the right to implement measures to combat food price volatility.“The Doha Development Agenda negotiations started a decade ago but they have yet to bring any meaningful contribution to reducing poverty,” said Stiglitz. “It is time to bring the talks to a close, but successfully doing so requires courage and sacrifice by the rich countries. They’ve got to accept that they are going to have to pay for the change.”Wilkinson said: “No industrial country got to where it is today without significant state intervention. Global trade negotiations need to recognise this reality.”The delegates also came to the conclusion that trade rules cannot be applied equally to rich and poor countries, but that there should be provision for countries at different stages of development. For example, developed countries could grant duty-free and quota-free access to their markets for least developed countries, and these developed countries could also boost the export capacity of lesser countries through trade assistance.Other topics under discussion included intellectual property rights and agriculture. The Brooks World Poverty InstituteEstablished in 2006, the Brooks World Poverty Institute is based at the University of Manchester, where Rory Brooks graduated in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in management sciences.BWPI founder Brooks also runs MML Capital, an investment firm which has invested over US$1.4-billion (R9.8-billion) in more than 70 emerging companies across Europe and the US.Brooks and his wife Elizabeth support various causes, including the Institute of Cancer Research in London.BWPI aims to create and share knowledge that will help eradicate poverty and inequality in the North and South; and to bring about change in international policies that foster poverty.last_img read more

Enjoydeal Heat Resistant Big Wavy Wig Long Hair Natural Synthetic Full Wigs purple : A nice purple wig for my costume box

first_imgA nice purple wig for my costume box. A nice purple wig for my costume box. Well made with a hair net included. The wig has hooks to hold it securely on the hair net and everything feels well made. No hair fell off while my kids were playing with it either, which is better than some previous wigs theyve owned. Item arrived in a disposable plastic bag, inside was a resealable bag and this contained the wig, a weaving cap and a hair net, it took approximately 2 weeks to arrive. The item was purchased for my daughter, and i was a little concerned as to the upkeep and styling required. I need not have worried, after putting on the hair net, and then the wig it fell neatly into place, and she advised it was easy to brush if required. She advised it was comfortable to wear (wore during a party) and well made, the addition of the hair net was a blessing as i never even thought about it. Her friends commented on the quality of the wig, no missing bits / clumps and vibrant colour, it also saves on hair dyes / chalks, and there are a multitude of colours available for all events. Overall i would recommend this product as a fantastic item, well manufactured and no mess with hair dyes etc. If this review was helpful to you, please hit the ‘helpful’ button. Item took a while to arrive but was advised that on purchasing. I was so happy when it did arrive, i’ve only ever bought cheap halloween wigs before but wanted something a bit more special for my daughter for christmas. Of course i had to try it when it arrived. You can feel the quality as soon as you pick it up, no bald patches, nice a thick and good quality. Just as bright as i wanted it to be. I think i may be borrowing this in the future ? i would definately recommend purchasing one of these wigs. Brilliant color and incredibly soft. The bangs are bit too long for my taste, but it might not be an issue for someone else. It’s comfy and easy to put on, and it actually stays in place. The only downside is, that it really becomes obvious that it’s a wig, if not worn let down, so forget putting it behind your ears or in a ponytail. For the price it’s absolutely worth it. Good quality, lovely colour and at a very reasonable price.Great quality / value itema totally plausible non committed alternative to an extreme makeoverEnjoydeal Heat Resistant Big Wavy Wig Long Hair Natural Synthetic Full Wigs purple A nice purple wig for my costume box. A totally plausible non committed alternative to an extreme makeover. So you’re a business man in your mid-forties, who finds great amusement in watching educational videos on youtube. Three nights ago you unintentionally learned how to apply a wig, watching a video by a lady called morumotto397, and have not stopped fantasizing about mopping your kitchen in style, looking like a real hollywood celebrity, since. You thought you could do with one of those afro party wigs your friend jason left at yours in 1996, but now you feel like something is missing in your life: a long, shiny, purple wig. A long shiny purple wig looks like a totally plausible non committed alternative to an extreme makeover at the moment. Plus warms up your head, protects your hair and neck from the sun and looks amazing. Just make sure you don’t do headstands, or you’re going to lose it on the dancefloor. Good quality, lovely colour and at a very reasonable price. . I received this wig in time to wear it for halloween. What a perfect colour for the night. I loved the feeling of very long thick hair, although the wig felt somewhat heavy. It slipped back everytime i put my head up, but then i am no expert in fitting wigs so it is possible i hadn’t put it on correctly. The wig comes with a head net to keep your own hair out of the way. Mine is so fine that i didn’t need it really. The wig felt a bit on the small side for me, again i could fault my skills in getting it on, but somehow i managed to plant it on my head. I bought some extra clips to help it stay in place. The colour is wonderful, beautifully rich and vibrant. Item took a while to arrive but was advised that on purchasing. Why The Time To Argue For A Meeting Is Now

first_imgYou’ve had a meeting or two with your dream client. They’re engaged, and you have developed an excellent understanding of their needs. At the end of your last meeting, they asked you to send them pricing and a proposal and told you they’d have a meeting with you in two weeks after they’ve had a chance to review what you send them. The chirping you hear are the crickets that the Gods of Sales have sent as a plague against your pipeline, a punishment for your ceding control of the process and failing your dream client (you have left them alone to figure things out for themselves). You are now chasing them, a desperate stalker begging for a meeting. If you are going to argue for a meeting, you want to do it while you are in a meeting. Waiting and chasing does nothing to improve your odds.Who Leads This Dance? In a choice between you leading your client through the process of making a decision to change or allowing them to lead, the responsibility to lead belongs to you. You can, no doubt, collaborate and bring your client into that process with you, improving their buy-in and both of your results. Or you can allow them to lead, even though they lack your knowledge and experience.Your dream client buys what you sell infrequently and for a single company. You frequently sell your solution and help many different people and lots of different companies, giving you a distinct advantage in situational knowledge. You know what works when it works and when it doesn’t, and why you might do one thing instead of something else.If someone should be leading, it should be you. It’s your responsibility, even if your dream client is trying to drive. There is a reason we call what we do “selling.” You have to sell a meeting, then you sell the process (a series of other meetings and commitments), and then you sell your solution. The Time to Sell a Meeting Is Before You Lose ControlThe time to sell the meeting is before you lose control of the process. The time to sell the process is when you are sitting across from your contacts. If you are going to trade value (an idea you will find in The Lost Art of Closing: Winning the 10 Commitments That Drive Sales), your rationale for the meeting and what your dream client gains by saying yes, is before your contact tries to take control of the process. You recommend the next steps and share how it benefits your client. No more pushy sales tactics. The Lost Art of Closing shows you how to proactively lead your customer and close your sales. If you miss the window and your contact tries to take control of the process (something they may not even be aware they are doing), you have to try to take it back by arguing your case for a meeting (without being argumentative, but by being a combative diplomat). You gain nothing by ceding control. You leave your dream client in a worse position, knowing they cannot answer their questions or resolve their concerns. They are also unlikely to be able to answer questions from their peers, and you should not expect them to sell the deal for you. You do, however, have a lot to lose.Losing Without a FightThere is a difference between being likable and needing to be liked. It is helpful to be likable, the kind of person people with whom people want to do business. Being smart and likable is an excellent combination. What is not helpful is needing to be liked, which means “conflict-averse,” unwilling to have difficult conversations when that is what is required. Being smart isn’t enough to make up for an unwillingness to engage in the conversation about what comes next.Look, you are going to leave some meetings without another meeting securely locked on your client’s calendar. However, there is no reason to give up without making a strong case for doing what you know to be right and preventing your dream client from skipping steps and avoiding the conversations they need to have to get what they want in the future. You gain nothing by giving up and giving in without giving your best effort in securing the next meeting.A Greater Challenge LaterIt’s no more comfortable having the conversation about what your dream client needs to do later, after time has gone by and you have spent months chasing them across time and space, both of you older and neither of you any wiser. Arguing your case with your dream client’s voice mail isn’t wildly effective, nor is making your case over email, where your note will quickly slip off the screen and forgotten. There is no scenario where waiting to have this conversation makes it easier for you to gain the commitment you need. It may, however, make it more difficult after your contacts have had conversations without you present to help them.If you have a choice between doing what is right and doing what is easy, do what is right. Doing what seems easy makes things more difficult in the long run.Trade enough value that you deserve a yes, and then ask. If you don’t get a yes, restate the value and ask again. Get the Free eBook! LeBron James Poses For Wedding Photo Of Strangers

If winning the NBA championship does not help repair his image, LeBron James’ recent personality growth just might. The Finals MVP has been far more congenial and accommodating (not that he was cold or unavailable before) in the wake of carrying the Miami Heat to the title over the Oklahoma City Thunder. And why wouldn’t he be?An avalanche of pressure was released with the accomplishment. And now he should be unabashed in his celebration. He appeared on David Letterman’s show in New York and received a standing ovation. And while at the Coconut Grove Ritz Carlton for hotel for an interview, James happened upon the wedding of Shaun and Jamie Kolnick. The did not know them, but he ended up giving them a moment they’ll likely display in their home for years by posing for a photo with them that has gone viral.“It was really unexpected and exciting,” said Kolnick. “Shaun was like, ‘That’s enough! We don’t need to get married anymore.’”Buzz had begun building hours before the ceremony that James was at the Ritz, said wedding planner Jen Schwartz, but no one was sure they’d actually spot the city’s new hero.“It was funny, because the bride’s brother was just dying, he was beside himself with excitement,” Schwartz said, laughing. “And at some point, she looked at him and said, ‘Okay, you’re more excited that LeBron James is here than you are for my wedding!’”It was an authentic moment for James, one that speaks to his mindset — and helps rebuild his image that took a hit two years ago when he bolted Cleveland for Miami. read more
